Why A Follow Up System Is Critical To Growing Your Business
Several years ago, I learned a really powerful lesson. I had a prospect call me up to help them build a new website for their business. They wanted a lot of fancy graphics, shopping cart, the works.
The conversation went great and they loved the portfolio we had of other clients we had worked with before. They knew that they wanted us to take over their website and build them a great new site that would help take their business to the next level.
We had everything in order for the sale and then came the price. Though it was completely reasonable, it was just out of the budget they expected. I tried working with them to remove a few of the features they wanted in order to get the price within their budget but they just couldn’t swing it at that time.
They even told me they didn’t think that the price was too high. They just hadn’t thought it out until they spoke with me to see what price range they really needed.
They thanked me for my time and said that they would get back to me when they came up with the money.
What I didn’t expect was that I’d end up learning a powerful lesson from them or that it would take longer than I expected.
At the time, I didn’t actually have a follow up system in place.
Why A “No” Isn’t Always (And Many Times) Really A No
Did you know that the average number of connections with a prospect you need to make from the time they first have contact with you until the time they usually but is between 6 and 10 times?
So how many times do you follow up with a prospect before you just “give up”?
If you’re like most people, not near enough!
Most of the time, when you first come in contact with a true prospect, they are in fact finding mode. Basically, they are still looking around and trying to find the right company to fulfill their needs.
Depending on your business, they may only need a day. But for some, they may need a lot more time. Months even, to make the choice and be in the right position to make their decision.
It’s all a matter of timing and you want to be there when the timing is right!

It doesn’t matter what the reason is, you need to ensure them that you are the right choice and keep top of mind awareness about you being the logical choice to fulfill their needs.

Remember the prospect that wasn’t ready when we talked?
This was all before I had learned the power that a good follow up system really has in increasing your sales and building long term relationships with your prospects and clients.
I had sent out a postcard to my list of prospects and customers about a trade show we were going to be at. It wasn’t even a promotion to buy anything. Just to tell them about the event and ask them to stop by our booth.
Out of the blue, I get a call from these guys and guess what?
The timing was right. They had just got a letter from their old company telling them that the company was going out of business and they needed to find someone else to take care of their website.
Talk about perfect timing. They saw my postcard and immediately called me up to talk.
After a great conversation they decided that they not only needed to move their site but were ready to create a brand new website with all the bells and whistles we had originally talked about.
Even after a year, they had remembered that they had wanted to work with me but the postcard was the reminder to give me a call since NOW they were ready. Yes, it was out of need but would they have called me immediately without the card? I doubt it.
My follow up reminded them that they not only had the need and needed someone fast, but that they had liked our work and it saved them time since they didn’t have to shop around for a new provider.
I was there when they needed me most.
They have since become a great long standing client that raves about our services all the time!
All because of one simple follow up postcard.
Lesson Learned
This was the point when I learned the power of follow up.
What if I had kept in touch with them more often?
What if I had emailed them a newsletter or sent them a simple thank you card on a regular basis?
Would it have taken a year to get them as a client?
Most likely not!
It might have only taken a few months for them to make the decision to come back to us.
Nowadays, many companies send out an email promoting one of their products or services and call that a follow up system.
We’ll that may be part of it but really… think about it.
If all you get is a pitch for another product and never hear anything else from a company, does that really do much to build the relationship?
Do you have any sense of loyalty to that company?
Nope!
